I knew I wanted to be a blogger – but I didn’t know how I was going to do it. I’ve tried. Twice – and failed. Twice. But here’s the thing. Failing is the first step to success. If you haven’t failed you haven’t tried hard enough or reached far enough. Failing is learning and learning is key to success. So, I took what I had learned and got started again.
My first step was to figure out what I wanted to blog about.
After tons (and tons) of research I learned I had to really identify with my niche to be successful. Well, I had identified my niche before and that didn’t work out. So….I did it again. But this time I really put a lot of thought in to it.
I got a pad of sticky notes and started noting just one thing I wanted to blog about on each note. Now this took a lot of notes for me because I have never been short on thoughts. I can come up with an idea about how to come up with ideas and make ideas have baby ideas until the end of days. You get it…..I have a lot of ideas.
To focus my thoughts a bit I gave myself a time limit. I set a timer for 1 hour and started noting ideas. An hour later I had more than 100 plus sticky notes all over my desk. At this point I knew I needed a bit more space to work in so I cleared everything else off my desk to use the entire desktop space.
The next step was to sort and group all my sticky note thoughts.
I started organizing them like you would anything else – like with like – because it works with anything. You can read more about my no fail organizing process here. As I was sorting these sticky notes I realized I had a couple of underlying themes that made grouping the ideas together easy. I also had 8 random ideas that did not relate to anything else on my desk at all. I stuck these to a page in my planner and moved on with eliminating them from my niche options. None of them was strong enough to carry my attention for very long any way.
What I ended up with was ideas and thoughts that pertained to Organizing, Decorating, and Planners.
You simply cannot image how much I love an organized, beautifully decorated planner – but more on that later.
So there is was. My niche. The focus of my blog. Organizing, Decorating, and Planners. Because I’m seriously Type A I couldn’t just leave it at that. I had to sort these ideas a little further.
Organizing became – Organizing Yourself (for thoughts, time, etc.), Organizing Your Home (for all things home organization and efficiency), and Organizing Your Business (for all things business related because I run 2 businesses from my home).
Decorating became – Decor for Living (decorating a home for yourself and your family to enjoy) and Decor for Selling (decorating with a buyer in mind – a.k.a. Staging your house for sale).
Planners is still just planners. Because, really, planners are amazing tools to accomplish all kinds of everything and keep everything on track. So, planners that pertain to organizing will also be found – you guessed it – in Organizing. Planners that pertain to decorating – will also be found in Decorating – because I’m organized like that 🙂
So there you have it.
This is the first step in how I found my way in the blogging world. Reading back through this post it seems like it was so easy, but it wasn’t. I put a lot of thought into it. If you find it’s not easy for you either then know that is perfectly normal. Give it time. Follow a process, such as the sticky note method of collecting thoughts, to really think through what you want your niche to be. Make sure it really appeals to you because for a while you will be the only one reading your blog. Unless you’ve told your mom. I’m sure you mom will read it if she can. And me – I will read your blog too. Leave it in the comments 🙂
Tell me – have you found your niche? How did you do it? Have you tried the super fancy and effective sticky note method? Let’s chat….
