How to choose the best planner layout that will work for you
Deciding on a planner seems easy at first – especially because there are so many free options to choose from – lots here on our printables page. I firmly believe using a paper and digital planner together – but for different things has been key to my staying organized in my life and my business. Making the decision to use a paper planner for the paper part was easy for me and hopefully will be for you too! But once you start considering all of them how do you figure out which one will work for you? How to choose the best planner layout that will work for you is easy if you give it just a little thought.
How much do you need to plan in your month?
A single page month at a glance page is great for those who:
- only need to note 1 or 2 things in a day’s section
- need to see things spread over a few days time
- write fairly small
A double page month at a glance page is great for those who:
- write too big for a one-page spread (don’t try to force yourself to change – get what works for you)
- need to see things spread over a few days time
- need to note more detail in any given day’s space (like a blog post title scheduled for that day)
Whether you need a single or a double paged month at a glance is often more of a personal choice than a choice of need. My best advice is to pick the one you can most comfortably write in. Don’t try to change to suit a planner! It’s too easy to choose a planner style that suits you – and that’s the way it should be.
How much do you need to plan in your week?
This depends on a couple of things. Do you work from home or go to another specific work location? If you go to another location for work do you need to include what happens there in your planner?
Weekly planner pages can be a great fit.
If you go to another place for work and don’t need to include work stuff in your planner you are probably best suited to a weekly layout. You probably need to plan meals and other things that need to get done outside of work time. Because work (or school) take up most of your day you probably just don’t need to note as much for each day.
The weekly layout is perfect for people who keep a separate planner (or none) for work. This layout is often good for students as well because school occupies their day in large chunks of time. If you write smaller or don’t need to note many words to stay on track, then a vertical layout is perfect for you. If you write larger or need to include a few more words for your world to make sense, then a horizontal weekly planner is probably a better fit. Either way, be sure to choose a planner page that has a space for notes and also some white space to make your own. You just never know what you might want to jot down and you need to know you have the space to do it.
Daily planner pages are better for some people.
If you need to integrate work things and home things into one planner, you would probably benefit from a daily page planner. This type of planner gives you a lot of page space to work with so you can keep a lot of information on hand for each and every day. Given that I run two businesses from my home, and I run my house, I use this type of planner.
Another reason to choose a daily planner page over a weekly spread is if you have a few things you need to keep track of on a daily basis. Do you track how much water you drink? How about your fitness activities? Maybe you keep a food diary – or any other type of journal for that matter. If you are a “tracking” person, then you would probably benefit from a daily page planner simply because it will give you the room you need to organize all the things that are important to you in your day.
Once you choose a place to start this is what you do
(This is exactly what I do and what I use to do it.) Print them out on this basic printer paper (print on both sides – flip on the long side), punch holes with a 3 hole punch, and place them in a planner binder. I also use these pens because they come in all my pretty colors and I just like how my planner looks this way. These pens also hold up well to my heavy writing style. (I don’t know way I press down so damn hard on a piece of paper?)

I know I can
waste spend a lot of time checking out other people’s planners. It’s awesome to see how creative some people are in using their planners. I tried so many different ones because they were pretty and they looked so awesome. That didn’t make them work for me.
I ended up creating my own and have never been happier. In that process, I learned that I really like creating planners. Now I do it just because I hope I can create something that works well for someone else – just as I have for myself. (There is so much more to come! The best thing about free printable planner pages is that you can simply choose another one if what you have isn’t working for you. This is always the route I think everyone should start with – and keep going with as long as they can. Once you find the perfect system for you, then you can invest in one of the great paid options available. But until you’re there – don’t spend the money.
All of my planners give you options.
Every single one of them comes in 5 different colors that people have told me they just love! You can choose a different color for each month or do a whole year in one color. You can choose either a 1 or 2-page month at a glance. Then you can choose a vertical weekly layout, a horizontal weekly layout, or even a single daily page that includes a meal plan, water, and fitness trackers. They are un-dated so you can start right now.
They are all free on the printables page, and I do hope you take just a moment to try the one that appeals to you the most!
