Giving your home a professionally decorated look really comes down to creating a decor plan and following the plan.
The first step in the planning process to to figure out what your colors are going to be. You can find a step by step along with a worksheet to guide you in the process here.
Now you have your colors chosen and in the correct proportions. Next it is time to choose your main furniture pieces. It seems like it should be really easy to choose the perfect furniture pieces – until you get started. There are literally more choices than you could possibly consider.
Here are the things you need to consider to make the best choice of main furniture pieces for your decor plan so that your house looks professionally decorated and not just thrown together willy-nilly.
Stay away from anything too trendy.
There are some fantastic trends happening right now. They are great. The problem with trendy is that it is next year’s dated. You don’t want to spend money on large pieces of furniture that are going to look dated before you know it.
Stick to neutral color and style in large pieces.
Large pieces of furniture, like sofas, beds, and dining tables, are not the place to bring in trendy colors, fabrics, or finishes. You want and need more timeless pieces. First of all you will not tire of them too quickly like you will overly trendy options. More importantly they wont look and feel dated before you are ready to replace them. Bring color and personality to the space with accent pieces and smaller decor items. It is less expensive, easily changed out, and gives your house the professionally decorated look and feel you want.
Consider the size of your family.
Both the number of people who do (and will) live in your house and their physical size matter – especially if some are still growing. For instance, if you are in the process of growing your family over the next few years then you want to make sure you have a sofa that more than a couple people fit on. Also, if your significant other is 6ft 5in tall, then you want to make sure they can lay in bed without their feet hanging over the end. Do not waste money on anything that does not fit your family. Consider what your family will look like in a few years.
- A full size sofa and a couple accent chairs give the most flexibility for arrangement in a room, sectionals seat the most family members at a time but don’t allow for much flexibility in arrangement. Consider which type of room you would prefer and why.
- Consider a dining table will leaves so that you can add to it temporarily when you have extra guests. You can also add to it permanently if it is ever moved to a larger house that needs a larger table.
Buy the best quality you can afford.
This should be the biggest part of your budget. It will save you so much money in the long run. In larger main pieces of furniture, like sofas, beds, and dining tables, quality matters. You can find poor quality that looks nice. If this is the best you can afford, by all means, buy it. But know this – it won’t last.
You will need to replace these pieces in just a couple years. You might want to consider budgeting for them now so you’re prepared to replace them when the time comes. If you can afford to spend just a little bit more to get better quality you are actually saving the full replacement cost of each piece only a few years down the line. It is less expensive to spend 20% more now (if you can) rather than spending 100% more replacing the item 2 years from now.
Don’t blow the budget – but buy the best you can afford. You won’t be sorry.
